Lovely, Fun Vacation Con
This con was enjoyable. Attendance was indeed mid-to-average, and I made exactly that, mid-to-average. But I was able to pay off the entire trip (which was extremely expensive coming from the mainland, mind you), and still with more than a few hundred profit, which was plenty enough for me really just wanting a paid trip to visit Hawaii. I met a lot of cool people, connected with a lot of new followers and supporters (Just ask!), and the entire experience was quite enjoyable! On Saturday evening after the hall closed, I even decided to attend a JPop concert that they were having, and it was fantastic, also.

There were some hiccups during set-up that should be noted. The Vendor Packet had said that load in would not be permitted through the front doors and to meet in the back of the hall - something apparently security was not made aware of. So load-in was kind of a time-consuming mess while staff and security tried to get that cleared up. But eventually it got worked out and we all got in alright. I also rented 2 additional tables to fit into my Premium Artist Alley space, and neither were at my space when I arrived, so I had to meet with their servicer to get them delivered. But I eventually also got those situated just fine. Everyone was extremely nice, and the staff was even more than willing to help me tear down some of my display on Day 3 when I was running a bit behind.

Speaking of tables, if you plan on bringing tabletop display stands, be sure that your clamps are over 2 inches tall - the tables were too thick to hold some of my stands, so I had to get creative with my display. Booths and extra tables were otherwise very affordable, and the Premium Artist Alley booths are comfortably spacious. Worth the money. Getting your Hawaii sales tax license was also simple and affordable, provided a very clean and easy-to-use interface, and involved fees that are way cheaper than some other states. Be sure to utilize the Hotel Discounts provided on the website, as they literally saved me hundreds in what a non-discounted hotel would have charged.

Note that if you plan to roll around suitcases to and from any nearby hotels, I recommend bringing or borrowing a legit dolly, or getting some better suitcase wheels, because although Honolulu is gorgeous, the roads and sidewalks are pretty trashed. One of my suitcases turned out with almost completely stripped wheels, by the end of the trip. The area is however extremely walkable, and just like Japan, there are 7/11's with fresh food and affordable options about every half mile. Very convenient. Restaurants and take-out are predictably extremely expensive in Honolulu, so if you want to keep your food budget light, take advantage of the 7/11's. Although also expensive, there also is a Walmart only about a 15-20 minute walk from the venue. Be aware that as soon as the show kicks in, the 7/11s will however sell out quick, so if you have a fridge in your hotel, maybe stock up on Day 0.

Besides the hiccups, Hawaii is amazing. The venue is gorgeous and amazing. The weather was very humid, so be prepared to shower twice per day and bring some light clothes and tank tops, but the weather was basically perfect. I felt so comfy surrounded by so many parks, the ocean and so many beautiful plants. If you're not local (like myself), I suggest flying with Southwest so you can get your two free checked bags at an affordable rate. If you can, take advantage of any point promos or bonuses that they may be offering, to get your round trip.

Although this is an extremely expensive con to attend when traveling from the mainland, a completely point and art-paid, 5 day trip to Hawaii was fantastic, and I certainly hope to participate again and stay even longer, next year.

An Excuse To Visit Honolulu
Very expensive con to travel to. Sales felt pretty slow throughout the weekend and were about average for a medium sized con. If your expenses aren't too high or reasonable then it's worth checking out the con at least once. It's a good excuse if you want to visit Honolulu but profits aren't too high due to average attendance. Wouldn't return personally but would probably send a proxy over since they allow it.
